Zamzam Water (5L)

Zamzam is the most honoured water on earth. It comes from a single well inside al-Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, a few metres from the Ka'bah, and it has been flowing for thousands of years without interruption. For Muslims it is not simply drinking water: it is a sign, a mercy, and a means through which people have sought healing, provision and the acceptance of their du'a since the time of Ibrahim (peace be upon him).

The story behind the well

The well exists because of a mother's desperation and her trust in Allah. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) left Hajar and the infant Isma'il in a barren valley with no people, no shade and no water, at Allah's command. When the food and water ran out, the child began to cry and Hajar ran between the two hills of Safa and Marwah seven times, searching for a passing caravan or any sign of help. It was after that seventh run — the run now commemorated in every Hajj and every Umrah — that the angel Jibril struck the earth and water gushed out. Hajar began to gather it with her hands, and the Prophet ﷺ told us that had she left it alone, the water would have flowed on the surface as a spring.

From that moment the valley was never empty again. The tribe of Jurhum settled there, the Ka'bah was raised by Ibrahim and Isma'il, and Makkah became a city around a well. Every pilgrim who drinks Zamzam today is drinking from the same source that saved a prophet's son.

In the Prophetic tradition

The narrations about Zamzam are well known and widely acted upon by the scholars.

“The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for.” (Reported by Ahmad and Ibn Majah)

This is the hadith that shaped the practice of the ummah. It means that when you drink Zamzam you should hold a clear intention — for healing, for knowledge, for provision, for children, for forgiveness — because the water is a means Allah has honoured, and means are used with purpose. The great scholars acted on this literally: Imam al-Shafi'i drank Zamzam for knowledge, for accurate archery, and — it is reported — for Paradise.

And in another narration, “and a healing from sickness.” The Prophet ﷺ also used to send for Zamzam while he was in Madinah and drink it, and he poured it over himself. Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said that he lived thirty days and nights with nothing but Zamzam, and he grew fat enough that the folds of his stomach appeared, and the Prophet ﷺ said: “It is blessed, it is food that satisfies.”

What people use it for

• Drinking with an intention. The everyday practice: a cup in the morning or after prayer, with a specific du'a held in the heart.
• Ruqyah water. Reciting al-Fatihah, Ayat al-Kursi, the last three surahs and the verses of healing over water, then drinking and washing with it. Zamzam is the water most people choose for this, though any clean water is valid.
• The sick and the recovering. Given to a person who is unwell, sometimes with honey or black seed mixed in, alongside — never instead of — medical treatment.
• Washing and wudu. Some people wash a limb or the face with it seeking blessing; the scholars permit this as long as it is done with respect and not in an impure place.
• Guests and family. In many households a flask of Zamzam is brought out for guests, especially in Ramadan, and given to a mother after childbirth.
• The deceased. Some families add a little Zamzam to the water used for washing the body, following the general practice of washing with water and sidr.

How to drink it — the etiquettes the scholars mention

1. Say bismillah. As with any drink, begin in Allah's name.
2. Face the qiblah if it is easy to do so.
3. Drink in three sips, pausing between them and breathing outside the vessel — the sunnah manner of drinking.
4. Make du'a before and while drinking, naming exactly what you want. This is the point of the hadith “for whatever it is drunk for.”
5. Praise Allah afterwards. Alhamdulillah for a mercy that came out of dry stone.
6. Do not waste it or use it disrespectfully — not for cleaning floors, not for washing impurities, not thrown away carelessly.

Making ruqyah water with Zamzam at home

Fill a clean glass or bottle. Place your hand near it or hold it, and recite with focus and certainty: al-Fatihah once or three times, Ayat al-Kursi (2:255), al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas three times each, and the verses of healing such as 17:82 — “And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers.” Blow lightly onto the water after each recitation, with a small amount of breath and no saliva. Then drink a portion daily and use the rest to wash the face, chest, hands and feet. Recite again when you refill.

Ruqyah must be with the words of Allah and His names, in a language understood, with the belief that the cure comes from Allah alone and the recitation is only a means. Anything involving unknown names, amulets, or asking other than Allah is not ruqyah — it is shirk, and we refuse to perform it and warn against it.

Storage and shelf life

• Store sealed, upright, in a cool dark place. A cupboard away from the stove is ideal.
• After opening, keep the lid tight and use a clean cup rather than drinking from the container.
• It does not spoil like juice or milk, but it can pick up tastes and smells, so keep it away from strong odours, chemicals and fuel.
• If it has been in a hot vehicle or a shipping container, let it settle at room temperature before drinking.

Honest cautions

Zamzam is a blessing and a means, not a replacement for medicine. If you or someone in your family is ill, see a qualified doctor and take the prescribed treatment; drink Zamzam alongside it with trust in Allah. Beware of people who sell “Zamzam” that is not Zamzam, or who claim it cures conditions that need surgery or medication. Genuine Zamzam is respected, not marketed with miracle claims — and we will never tell you it replaces a hospital.

Also beware of anyone who uses Zamzam, or ruqyah generally, to frighten people into paying for repeated sessions, to accuse them of magic, or to isolate them from their families. That behaviour is a known form of exploitation. If someone tells you that you are bewitched and only they can fix it, for a price, stop and speak to a person of knowledge you trust.

Keeping Zamzam in the home

A practical arrangement that many families use: one sealed container for drinking, decanted into a clean flask or jug that stays in the kitchen, and a separate small glass bottle kept specifically for ruqyah water so that it is never confused with the drinking supply. Label the ruqyah bottle. Refill it weekly, recite over it each time, and let everyone in the house know what it is for so that guests are not served from it by mistake and it is not used for anything disrespectful.

Teach the children the etiquette — bismillah, three sips, du'a, alhamdulillah — and let them pour for their grandparents. A practice that a household performs together is a practice that survives, and Zamzam is one of the easiest sunnahs to hand to the next generation because it involves nothing but drinking water with a present heart.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really Zamzam? We supply sealed containers as distributed in Saudi Arabia. We do not decant, dilute or rebottle it ourselves.

Can I drink it every day? Yes. The companions and scholars drank it regularly, and it is simply blessed water.

Can non-Muslims drink it? It is water; there is no prohibition on a guest drinking it. It is offered generously.

Can I use it for wudu or ghusl? The scholars permit wudu and ghusl with Zamzam, though many prefer to keep it for drinking out of respect.

Does it need to be read over to work? No. It is blessed in itself. Recitation adds a further means, and the healing in all cases is from Allah.

Can I mix it with honey or black seed? Yes, and many people do. Mix only what you will drink soon.

When you drink Zamzam, remember the woman running alone between two hills with a crying baby and no water in the desert. She did not stop, and she did not lose hope in Allah. The water came from under her son's feet — from the place she was standing.
